I am researching my grandfather Charles McCallum who joined the Scottish Rifles on the 14 September 1914 according to his pension records. He was a private, Regimental No. 14743 and was discharged from Egypt with spinal disease in 1916 according to medical records I have found.
This seems to indicate he was in the 1/7th Battalion who went via Egypt to Gallipoli. He died in 1926 aged 49. I have not found any service record but his medal records show he was awarded the 1914-15 Star. This document gives rise to several queries and I wonder if anybody can give me any clarification. The record gives the Corps. as 11/ Sco Rif. but I am not clear what the 11 means ? The Theatre of War states France 20/9/15 but this seems at odds with Egypt ? Against 1914-15 Star is the following; Taken on Charge CRV.611.d.16.6.20 (2060/Adt) renewal (my best guess at word)1.?.29 A d 6.7.20 (2060/Adt) Dis ?
Then under the title of "Correspondence" Inft y Recs. Hamilton returns 1914-15 Star. for amendment. 12/6/70. ?
I do hope someone can give my some clue as to what all the above comments mean.
Many thanks for any assistance.

The 11 you are talking about here is the 11th Battalion Scottish Rifles who initially went to France on 19/09/1915 and stayed on Western Front until 10/11/1915 when they were shipped to Salonika in Greece to help fight the Bulgarians. They remained there until the end of the war. Theatre of War on index cards always states the first one they went to. Being sent to Egypt makes sense as the British Army had large Hospitals there, which dealt with casualties (wounds & disease) from the Gallipoli, Egypt and Palestine campaigns and those that couldn't be dealt with in Salonika. My uncle was with the Cameron Highlanders at Salonika and got malaria - had to be sent back in 1917. There were more casualties from the conditions than the fighting. A good book on this campaign is "Under the Devil's Eye", if you want to know more about it. The 11th were ironically with the 26th Division. "Inft y Recs. Hamilton returns 1914-15 Star. for amendment. 12/6/70." This means the Infantry Records Office in Hamilton received back his Star to have the details on it changed as he/or is family advised it was incorrectly engraved. This is quite common. I think the date will actually be 12/6/1920.

Hi Smithy
Many thanks for the reply and I notice by the time on your reply you must have been burning the mid night oil, unless of course you live outside of UK.
Your assistance has cleared up several things as I had assumed he had been with the 1/7th Battalion and had gone to Gallipoli. This had been reinforced with the reference to Victoria Road as he lived in Aitkenhead Road behind Dixon's Blazes.
Your probably correct about the date as I struggled to interpret some of the writting on his medal record. There are several 2's written on the card but none looked like the date I assumed was 70. He, his wife and daughter (my mother) were all dead by 1970 so I could not see who was returning his medal for ammendment.
The date also makes sense of some of the other notes about "Taken on charge" 16.6.20 and then what I thought was "renewal" is probably now "receipt".
The book you mention seems to be out of print at the moment but my local Council's library service have a copy but it is out on loan so I will try and reserve it.
The Salonika front is new to me and having now done a little research on it I can understand why it is reffered to as "forgotten".
Again many thanks and I wonder if your Uncle and my Grandfather ever came into contact with each other?
Best wishes.
